Category Archives: Song Assignment

Every week Lindsay West and Vladimir Lad (AKA Dave Millar) pick a random theme and each have to write and record a song on that theme in no more than 7 days. Their efforts, along with a new Song Assignment for the following week, are uploaded every Wednesday.

It’s up to you to vote on your favourite song each week to decide which of them wins. The winner receives glory and bragging rights.

Sweets for My Sweet

This week we’ve written about candy-so you can get over your Easter chocolate hangover to the sweeeeet sounds of our favourite edible delights. Many thanks to special guest Little Pebble who came up with the idea and has joined in for this one: http://songassignment.wordpress.com/

SA No. 11-Cover the Song That Was No. 1 on the Day You Were Born

This was a very difficult one for me, as I felt I couldn’t possibly do justice to Spandau Ballet’s original “True”. I did my best and tried to stay with the 80s synth vibe, but discovered there’s no way I can sing like Tony Hadley. If you follow the link, you can listen to my effort and also DM’s “Bright Eyes” by Art Garfunkel. Who knew that we were born with such classics playing in the background?

Looking for new ideas

Does anyone have any ideas for our Song Assignments? So far we’ve covered lullabies, cooking recipes, birds, newspaper articles, buildings , plants and secret places. You can see it’s pretty varied, so if you have any inclination to hear your imaginings put to music, please get in touch here or at http://songassignment.wordpress.com/
Thank you!

Yum! another Song Assignment up and ready…

Yes this week it is about making food, so listen after lunch to avoid hunger pangs. Dave has written a sexy little number about making pasta for his friends, while I have composed a Sesame St.-esque ode to baking chocolate cookies. Enjoy! And vote for whichever sounds the most delicious…

Song Assignment No. 5: Pick a newspaper article at random, write a song

This week we all chose an article at random and wrote a song based on that. I landed on what seemed like the most depressing and colourless story in the whole paper, but which actually turned out to hold some poetic gems. I used these without hesitation and combined them with a simple bassline to produce…quite a depressing song actually, but what else did I expect? As always, you can listen and cast your vote here:

Song Assignment No.4: Pick a Building, Write a Song

This week, VL writes about his childhood fear of the monastery near he house he grew up in. LW (that’s me) writes about La Sagrada Familia, a cathedral by Gaudi in the city where I was born. Strange that we both chose religious buildings…You can listen and cast your vote here:

Song Assignment

Here is a link to a little project I’ve started with my pal and band-mate Dave. Every week we write a song to a brief and then record and post it on the site. You can vote for your favourite and even post your own song for each assignment. Hope you enjoy!
